What inspired you to pursue a career in real estate, and how has being part of a women-led team shaped your professional journey?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

Sabra Kirkpatrick: "I chose real estate for its flexibility, which allowed me to prioritize my children while providing for my family. Being open about my family situation built trust with clients."

Sarah Koenig: "I grew up in a real estate family, and being part of a women-led team fosters a supportive environment that prioritizes mentorship, collaboration, and work-life balance."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC / Sag Harbor, NY

"Juliana and I started developing properties together in the 1980's with co-ops in the city before that was really a thing. Juliana after years of running her own business decided to get her real estate license and has been a very successful agent ever since.
I continued to develop properties in the Hamptons after I left Wall Street shortly in 2001.  I had renovated or built new homes for years before I decided to obtain my real estate license to enhance my housing development business.  Then teaming up with Juliana has brought more business together both in the city and the Hamptons.  Knowing that they have someone who understands the construction of a property puts the customer's mind at ease and enhances the buying and selling process.  Having an agent team in the city and the Hamptons links it all together."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side, NYC

"I was home with my children after having been a lawyer and I was looking for something to do. That was a bit more flexible. That was 27 years ago. I believe that women are as good at business as men are and bring something to business that men are unable to. I think that is one of the secrets to my success."

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"I grew up in Manhattan and raised my two children here.  I am a New Yorker through and through.  I love working with people and helping them in the most important decision they will ever make in their lives.  I like being their compass in navigating the tumultuous seas of a NYC purchase or sale. I enjoy that this business is not just a business but a life-style.  My best friends and family are my clients.  There is no line for when business end and ‘life’ begins.  This business and helping my clients and friends is my entire life.  I enjoy being creative in shaping my own entrepreneurship, running a business, and working with the most terrific team-mates in the industry.  My team and I are in constant touch, working on our clients’ needs 24/7; I truly love that!"

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"Jackie's passion for real estate began approximately 25 years ago in Westchester, after prioritizing raising my family. I quickly recognized the unique flexibility that real estate offered, alongside my deep appreciation for architecture and design. The opportunity to help buyers find the perfect home became both a rewarding and enjoyable pursuit.

Lisa’s real estate career spans over 30 years, beginning in New York City. Growing up with a father who built homes on Long Island, her love for architecture and design was cultivated at a young age. Lisa also valued the flexibility real estate provided, enabling her to balance raising her children while continuing to nurture her passion for the industry. Together, Lisa and I offer mutual support in both our professional and personal lives. We believe in the power of collaborative problem solving and maintaining a sense of humor throughout the challenges and rewards our business brings. The head of our team and BHS, Bess Friedman, our strong and vocal female CEO circumvents all the noise and has us stand as a company on a higher moral ground. Bess always has a clear and strong message for both women and men, not only in our business, but in life."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"We have been partners in residential real estate sales for over 30 years. Both our love of design, architect and personal connections in this wonderful city we both call home led us to this decision. Being a part of a women-led team has been a true gift in so many ways. It means working in a collaborative environment that fosters resilience and innovation, while steadily uplifting and empowering one another with a unique sense of camaraderie and understanding. Our team is driven by empathy, strong communication, and a shared vision of success."

What unique strengths do women bring to the real estate industry, and how does your team leverage these to stand out in a competitive market?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

Sabra Kirkpatrick: "Women are strong, fierce, smart, witty and so much more and need to show compassion and empathy, which I find most effective. I believe grace and compassion are a few traits that have helped my team be successful. It's actually funny for me to hear myself say those words out loud because I am acutely aware that most people consider me "tough," "punctual," "direct," but the truth is, there is a time and place for those emotions just like there is a time and place for compassion and empathy. Selling a home is not always a business decision and life changes often dictate home sales and purchases. I get that not all transactions are desired and because I understand that, I am able to comfort clients when needed and that goes a long way!  I firmly believe that women are more comfortable showing their emotions and sometimes that is all a client needs. Support, a tender heart, empathy and compassion."

Sarah Koenig: "Women bring unique strengths to the real estate industry, such as empathy, strong communication, collaboration, attention to detail, negotiation skills, and adaptability. These qualities help build trust with our clients, foster long-term relationships, and create a supportive, innovative team environment. The Kirkpatrick Team leverages these strengths by prioritizing collaboration, client connection, and meticulous attention to every transaction. This approach sets us apart in a competitive market, ensuring we provide personalized, thoughtful service and deliver outstanding results."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC

"Juliana and I have been in sales our entire lives in one way or another.  I think women have deep empathy in general and customers pick up on that.  Real estate is a very personal thing, and I believe women are unique, in general, in the way that they bring that empathy to the customer."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side:

"I think that real estate is different than other businesses because there's a real psychological component. Women tend to be more focused on people's feelings and I think that can really help in real estate. Well, you don't want people to get too wrapped up in their feelings, you have to understand the people to get attached to their home whether they're buying or selling. I lean into the fact that I bring my more female qualities to my style and the fact that I'm a mother; I'm proud of those qualities."

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"Every deal, every client, every transaction is my baby.  I nurture every deal as if it were a child sprung from my loins.  I used to have a joke that, like Rumplestilkin, I would offer my first-born child to secure a showing with a co-broker for my client (we all know that it is not always easy to get appointments at the time/date a client may be available).  I joke now that it would be my first-born grandchild."

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"Our strengths as women in real estate are in our intuitive ability to understand the needs of both buyers and sellers. With over 50 years of combined experience in the industry, we thrive on the excitement of each new deal, embracing the highs while learning to accept the challenges. We try and bring patience and empathy to every transaction, whether working with first-time buyers purchasing a studio or guiding a sophisticated seller through the decision to leave their home. Above all, we always strive to be attentive listeners and effective problem solvers."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"Women are naturally decisive, empathetic, and attentive listeners. Understanding and valuing our clients' needs is at the heart of what we do. With over 30 years of experience in the business, this ability has become second nature, allowing us to build trust, foster meaningful relationships, and provide exceptional service."

How do you support and empower other women in real estate, both within your team and in the broader industry?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

Sabra Kirkpatrick: "I love helping people! I don't care what your gender is. Maybe that's a female thing although I can think of many men who have helped me get to where I am today and without them... who knows!  I like to say that I am a glass-is-half-full kind of girl, and I believe in the good of mankind. I will help anyone who asks and so far, I've been blessed and lifted by most people I have leaned on. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you need help, ASK!  There are so many wonderful, caring and compassionate people in this world and in our industry."

Sarah Koenig: "Sabra and I are in constant communication every single day. We work together on each transaction, always supporting each other and bouncing ideas off one another. Additionally, we advocate for women in the broader industry by participating in networking events and growth opportunities through professional development. This approach helps foster a more inclusive and empowering environment in real estate."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC

"In other industries, for instance Wall Street, competition does not bring out the best in women sticking together but in real estate I think it's a different animal. I have developed many friendships with my fellow women agents which makes the business so much easier."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side:

"I mentor other women and have lots of female friends in the industry."

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"Having been a single mother, and raising my children working in this crazy business, in this crazy city:  I am extremely understanding if a team member going through the same struggles."

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"We empower each other through constant support and collaborative problem solving. With a "never give up" attitude, we try and approach each situation with patience and respect, whether navigating a setback from another broker or client, or celebrating a positive accomplishment.  Our commitment to professionalism and a positive outlook is what we have tried to expect from others in our industry, both female and male."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"We are huge cheerleaders for ALL women in our industry."

How has the real estate industry evolved for women over the years, and what changes would you still like to see?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

"Maybe I came into the industry (some 15+ years ago) when the market was already favorable towards women or maybe I am just one of the lucky ones, but I have had such wonderful experiences in real estate as a woman, with women and with men. In our industry, women can be the bread winners, to be the number one salesperson in their company or even be the top produces in the country!  There is nothing holding us back and the sky is the limit so don't let your gender stop you from doing anything.  Seriously, this is 2025. Anything goes."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC

"Women real estate agents have gone from a part time after thought job to a full-time successful living for most who put in the time.  Lots of opportunities for women, like me as a developer, have opened up more and more."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side:

"I think that in general, the world has evolved and understands the concept that people don't have to be in an office wearing a suit from 9 to 6. Our business has always been a bit different and more flexible and so in some ways, it's always suited mothers more. Now with the use of portable technology in every business, it's easier to multitask and take care of your children and your home and be a successful broker."

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"Since many women went into this business, since its inception, thinking they could do this on the side while they raised a family (as I did... be careful what we wish for!) women were always at the forefront of this industry.  This is one of the few careers where that was the case: there was no glass ceiling for us.  Women must make things work; they are negotiating all day in their daily lives (have you ever tried to get small children out of the house to school in the morning!).  Life is a negotiation, women’s innate ability to be flexible and make things work, are what has made women particularly successful and the shining stars in Real Estate.

I'd like to see more younger women join this wonderful, creative, and fulfilling industry and benefit from the positive nature of being an entrepreneur. To be an entrepreneur puts you in control of your destiny and empowers you to take chances leading to great opportunities and satisfaction."

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"When Lisa began her real estate career in New York City, the industry was governed by certain expectations for women—heels were encouraged, and stockings were often recommended when wearing skirts.  Real estate at the time was predominantly female, but the dress code was undeniably rigid. In contrast, my experience in the suburbs was different; women were encouraged to dress professionally in whatever outfit they felt most comfortable wearing. While standards have certainly evolved over the years, we both agree that dressing for success is important, for both men and women."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"Bess, BHS' CEO, is a woman we deeply respect and admire. Her leadership, vision, and dedication inspire us every day, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and empowerment within our team."

What does Women’s History Month mean to you, and how do you celebrate the achievements of women in your field?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

Sabra Kirkpatrick: "I am extremely grateful to those amazing women who came before me. Because of their strength and perseverance, I am able to perform without thinking about my gender. Because of them, I am blessed to compete in a market where my advice is requested and is not hindered by my body parts. I do not think about my gender at all let alone as a detriment. Instead, I know I am equal.  How blessed are we?  Am I?  To say I am grateful of those women who came before me, is an understatement!"

Sarah Koenig: "Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the incredible achievements and contributions of women throughout history. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the women who’ve paved the way in real estate, acknowledging their impact and inspiring the next generation of women to continue breaking barriers."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC

"It means the world to us because the younger generations, in general, don't realize what women had to go through before them.  So much has changed.  When I first began on Wall Street women couldn't wear pant suits. There are so many similar issues and so many much larger issues for women throughout the years and all the years to come like glass ceilings that have been broken and so many more that need to be broken that we still have a lot of work to do.  Speaking about your own personal history to the younger generation will hopefully bring respect to the women before them and hopefully continue the change towards complete freedom for all women around the world who are still literally enslaved to this day."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side:

"I am so proud of women who stand up for themselves and for women who help other women. I am also so glad that women are now found in almost equal numbers in almost every field."

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"Being raised by a strong mother and grandmother, who immigrated from the Soviet Union with me as a baby, I know first-hand how hard women have had to work to prove themselves, and how strong they really are.  The feminist revolution added the complexities of navigating the workplace to all the other responsibilities a woman already had.  If I did not have the strong work ethic instilled in me by my female predecessors, there is no way I would have been able to achieve the success I am so proud of having achieved in over two decades in this wonderful industry.  If I had not had adversity, I would never have found my way to real estate: my true passion in life.  It has allowed me to live a creative and exciting life.  No mediocrity or boredom here!"

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"We are so pleased about the recognition of women in every industry.  We should take time to celebrate our achievements as women every day, recognizing that while some days may be more challenging than others, tomorrow brings a new opportunity for success and growth.  We do feel a strong comradery with other women in real estate and hope that is mutual."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"Women’s History Month holds deep significance for us. It is a time to reflect on the remarkable achievements of women across all fields throughout history. In our industry, we celebrate and support women year-round, empowering them in their endeavors and championing their success."

What advice would you give to women looking to build a successful career in real estate today?

The Kirkpatrick Team - West Palm Beach, FL

Sabra Kirkpatrick: "I believe that we create our own destiny and that if you want something bad enough and you are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to reach said goal, anything is possible. Manifestation is real!  Set goals and methodically check them off the list, one by one, and then do it again. If becoming a listing agent is your goal, get one listing and then knock on each and every neighbor's door. Give each neighbor a business card and invite them to your weekend open house. Make sure the whole neighborhood knows your name! And make sure they don't forget it.  The more people who recognize your name, the more referrals will come your way!  Happy selling."

Sarah Koenig: "Stick with it! Find a mentor or a partner to grow with. There is always more to learn, each day is different and offers an exciting new lesson."

Sarah Ferguson & Juliana Frei - East Side, NYC

"Be bold.  Be honest.  Be assertive.  Be positive.  Protect your time and use it wisely. Learn more things than you think you need to."

Lisa Lippman Team - West Side:

"Work hard. Work smart. Be true to yourself. Lean into your feminine style if that's what you have!"

Anna Kahn Team - West Side, NYC

"Be ready to work hard!  This is a tough business in every way, but it is also the most rewarding lifestyle I could wish on anyone."

Rose and Siegel Team - East Side, NYC

"If possible, begin your career as part of a team. Even if you enter the business with strong connections in the industry, there is always much to learn. We recommend having a bank account that will allow you to pay your bills while waiting to conclude your first deal.  Stay current with technology and continuously develop the skills required for success.  We are fortunate at BHS to have great technology and marketing departments to always help us and enable us to grow our business. Additionally, show respect for both your colleagues and competitors and remember that honesty and integrity are essential in building trust and credibility. Be a good listener and a proactive problem solver. Ultimately, when you love where you work and are passionate about what you do, your job will become that much more rewarding."

Julie & Elise Team - West Side, NYC

"Build a strong network, find a great mentor, embrace confidence & assertiveness, always be curious, stay resilient, adaptable and never stop learning. That said, it’s just as important to set boundaries and strive for a healthy work-life balance. Real estate can be demanding, but maintaining time for yourself, your family, and your well-being is key to long-term success."
