Aptly named "The Garden State," New Jersey is home to some of the best farms in the northeast. According to the Department of Agriculture, farming is the state's third-largest industry, generating billions of dollars in revenue each year and producing some of the country's top exports of blueberries, cranberries, peaches, tomatoes, and more.
While farmers markets are popular throughout the state year-round, there is something truly special about visiting one during the fall months. A temperate climate and a wealth of delicious, seasonal produce make for the perfect opportunity to add some color to your fridge while supporting local farmers.
With over 9,000 farmers throughout the state, there are plenty of farmers markets in Jersey that run throughout the year. Here are a few worth considering, as recommended by Brown Harris Stevens Agents Lori Staselis and Mary Therese Baird.
Hoboken
"One of my favorite markets is the Hoboken Uptown Farmers Market at the 14th St. Viaduct. The market offers fresh fruit, honey, homemade pies, sauces, and organic meats and fishes.
The quality is amazing, and the connection to the farmers is an added bonus. I always enjoy speaking with them about their work." --- Lori Staselis
The market is open every Saturday through December from 9am - 2pm and features live music for visitors to enjoy while they shop.
Jersey City
Of the many farmers markets in Jersey City, Van Vorst Park's was our top recommendation. Located within convenient proximity to the PATH train, it is definitely worth a stop for locals and visitors alike. Offering everything from fresh fruits and veggies to baked goods and prepared meals to take home, there is a flavor for every palate. It is open Saturdays from 8:30am - 1:00pm.
Montclair
Montclair is known for its variety of parks and green spaces, so it should come as no surprise that the area is a prime destination for farm-to-table outposts to explore. Recommended by Mary Therese Baird, the Montclair Farmers Market is held every Saturday at the Walnut Street Station. Since starting in 1992, it has grown to showcase over 30 local vendors, ranging from nearby farms to independent bakers and fair-trade coffee producers.
Other Areas
If you are planning on venturing outside of Hudson County or Essex County, you'll definitely find some great market options throughout the state! Morgan's Farm, located in Cedar Grove, was also recommended by Baird. The family-run farm has been in operation since 1895. It specializes in local honey, maple syrup, and elderberry syrup.
While there, you can also browse Farmer John's handmade cutting boards, which make the perfect gifts for nearly any occasion, as well as a variety of handmade soaps and candles.
Another market worth trying is the Summit Downtown Farmers Market, open on Sundays from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Now in its 29th season, the market sells a variety of goods in addition to produce, including pet food, homemade pasta sauces, and pottery. It is also a charitable market, offering donation and volunteer opportunities to help distribute food to those in need.
