Rare Old World Quogue Estate With Ties to MLB Hall of Fame Commissioner Bowie Kuhn Hits The Market

For the first time in five generations, a Quogue estate once home to famed MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and his wife Luisa, has hit the market for $6.895 Million.

11 Shinnecock Road, completed in 1890, has been a family compound for the Degener/Kuhn clan for over 100 years. Luisa, who spent her summers in Quogue, came to the property upon her marriage to her first husband, George Degener III. After he tragically passed away in an auto accident, young Luisa married Bowie Kuhn. The senior Degeners welcomed the growing Degener/Kuhn family into the main house, and spent the rest of their years living in the converted barn on the property, even after Kuhn purchased the home in the 1960s.

Bowie Kuhn was the MLB commissioner from 1969 -1984 and served as legal counsel to the National League for nearly 20 years prior, conducting baseball business from his office at 11 Shinnecock. The couple traveled each summer from Quogue to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame weekend. Bowie was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008, one year following his death. Luisa continued to summer in Quogue until she passed away in 2023.

The Quogue estate served as the summer home for the couple and their four children, enjoying the proximity to the Shinnecock Yacht Club, the Quogue Field Club and the beautiful Quogue beaches. There they entertained other local sports notables such as Howard Cosell and Julian Goodman on the wraparound porch, welcomed extended family for holiday celebrations including Thanksgiving football games on the expansive back lawns and hosted grand celebrations, including their daughter’s wedding. The property will always be a special place for the family - but it’s time for a new family to build their own memories here.
