Ms. McGivern has an undergraduate degree in government from Dartmouth; a master's degree in International Affairs from Columbia; and a law degree from Georgetown University, where she was an editor for the Journal of International Law. Joan recently retired as General Counsel after 15 years at the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP), employing her legal expertise in entertainment and intellectual property law, digital media rights, technology and international joint ventures, as well as lobbying and trade association work on behalf of ASCAP's over half million songwriter and music publisher members. Before ASCAP, Ms. McGivern clerked for a federal judge in New York and worked for 12 years in commercial litigation at White & Case, including real estate disputes, mergers & acquisition (M&A) contests, probate proceedings and complex contract litigation. Joan Morgan McGivern was born in Southampton and has been coming to her family home in East Hampton ever since. She has two sons--graduates of Harvard and Cornell--who now represent the fourth generation of her family to come to East Hampton.
