The Bronx has long been known as the "Borough of Parks and Universities," and for good reason. In addition to noteworthy schools like Fordham University and Manhattan College, the borough is home to over 1,700 parks, playgrounds, and recreational areas.
Looking to spend a spring day in the Bronx? Here are a few parks and recreational areas we recommend.
Van Cortlandt Park
Encompassing 1,146-acres of the northwest Bronx, Van Cortlandt Park is the 4th-largest park in New York City. The park was named after the first native-born mayor of New York, Stephaus Van Cortlandt. There are multiple walking paths, athletic courts, and green spaces to enjoy with friends and family.
Riverdale Stables
Riverdale Stables is an 80-stall barn in Riverdale that offers boarding and training of private horses, Summer and Winter Camps, and lessons for people of all ages.
So popular are the stables that their slogan is "Where New York City Learns to Ride"
For those not looking to saddle up, the stables also put on exciting horse shows.
Wave Hill Public Gardens
Located on the west side of the Henry Hudson Parkway near 249th Street, the gardens span 28 acres and are also the site of the Wave Hill Estate and Cultural Center, which includes a historic home and a greenhouse.
The New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden is a museum, educational institution, and plant research organization located in Bronx Park. The site features more than one million plant species, as well as several unique and engaging exhibitions.
The Gardens' latest exhibition is the annual orchid show, which runs through May 1st.
