With Thanksgiving upon us, I thought it fitting to focus on things to be grateful for, particularly in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  Although, many stress out over this holiday because it often means days of preparing and hours of working in the kitchen; I look forward to it. It is an opportunity to remind myself and my children of all we have to appreciate in our community.

There are countless ways to make the most of the Thanksgiving holiday in Fairfield County. Here are a few special events that you can consider adding to your calendar, as you prepare to spend quality time with family and friends.

The 2023 Harbor Point Turkey Trot, taking place on Nov. 23, is the perfect way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday. The 12th annual 5K fun run welcomes all, whether you are a runner, "trotter", or walker, with no entry fee. In the spirit of giving, Harbor Point Stamford is partnering with the non-profit agency Person-to-Person, Inc., which provides Fairfield County residents-in-need with a wide range of services from food and clothing, to financial assistance and college scholarships. The race will kick off at 8 a.m.

In addition to the one held at Harbor Point, the Greenwich Alliance for Eduation will host their own 5K & 1 mile fun run. The 2023 Turkey Trot will take place at Bruce Park, with post-race refreshments and live entertainment. Get your tickets for the race, taking place on Nov. 25 here

Another exciting event, in celebration of the holiday season, is the First Light Festival organized by the Old Greenwich Merchant’s Association. It's quintessential old-fashioned Americana at it’s best, and is a block party like no other. Stores open their doors and serve hot cocoa, while carolers sing and horse drawn carriages cruise up and down the block, and Upper Crust Bagel has dancing under a disco ball while the ever popular Garden Catering provides a savory snack. The festival will take place on Dec. 2 from 5-8 p.m., downtown on Sound Beach Ave. and Arcadia Rd.  in Old Greenwich. Parking is limited, so consider alternative transportation methods such as the train or walking.
